Kazakhstani oil giant fined less than $1million for methane mega leak. Methane is a major contributor to the greenhouse gas problem. Many times more potent than CO2. It is likely that there have been countless undetected methane leaks from oil drilling sites all over the world. Last year in Kazakhstan, satellites capable of detecting large methane concentrations monitored what is thought to be the worst ever recorded. The mega leak lasted from June to December, where after a blowout, it is estimated that over 100 thousand tonnes of the gas escaped.
