State oil company giants Aramco (Saudi Arabia) and ADNOC (UAE) are developing lithium extraction facilities. Lithium is a major component of the rechargeable batteries used in many devices including electric vehicles (EVs). The oil well development process often uses large quantities of brine. These oil companies are now filtering the brine to extract lithium. This will allow them to sell the rather expensive metal on the open market, or as in the case of Saudi Arabia, use it for their own future EV car production. They are also experimenting with the viability of extracting lithium from sea water.

Jane Duncan Filtering the salt water sounds far more eco friendly than scraping out vast evaporation ponds like they have in South America.
Richard Johnson Brine is pumped down the well during the drilling process, to bring rock chips from the drill bit up to the surface. It is also used to counter the well pressure and stop collapse of open hole well.
