A satellite made from magnolia wood to be launched this year. LignoSat will make it's way first to the International Space Station (ISS) in September 2024 and then get cast in to Earth orbit 2 months later.

Over a year of research in labratories and on board the ISS discovered magnolia to be the best wood for the project. It best resisted the rigours of space, didn't crack or distort during trials.

  The entire project will cost nearly $200,000 (USD) from design to launch to orbit.
• Jane Duncan
  The main reason for using wood is to avoid pollution from metals such as aluminium as they vaporise in the atmosphere during re-entry. Thousands of tons of metal orbit the Earth and more is going up every year.
• James Hay
  In the first 60 years of space activity we have put over 10,000 tons of stuff in to space. Fully complete the ISS is over 450 tons.
