Out of all the big Western oil companies, only Shell showed any interest in the latest round of block sales in Iraq. Out of 13 blocks on offer, they bid on 1 but were outbid by the Iraqi Kurdish KAR Group. Reasons for this lack of interest include the difficulties of conducting business in Iraq and corruption. Also some areas are dangerous to operate in. China were awarded 10 blocks and the other 3 went to Iraqi Kurdish KAR Group.
