Solid state batteries were invented nearly 200 years ago by Michael Faraday. Providing more power they are faster to charge and safer compared to the normal batteries containing a liquid. Safer in that there is little to no chance of fire or explosions. Until now they have been difficult and therefore expensive to manufacture. Currently used in small appliances like internal heart pacemakers, where leakage, explosion or fire would be a big problem for the user. There hasn't been enough interest in the technology until electric vehicles became so popular. The search for a better battery is now attracting big investment. New advances from car manufacturing giant Toyota are promising. A longer life battery that you can fully charge in ten minutes could be in production soon.
