The new Dangote Oil Refinery and petrochemical plant located in Lekki near Lagos, Nigeria will by some measures be the biggest of it's kind in the world. If it reaches the predicted capacity of 650,000 barrels per day it will be Africa's biggest refinery and the world's biggest single-train facility.
A further great boost to the growing Nigerian economy. This plant will supply oil products for decades.
It is part owned by the Nigerian government through their Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) state owned company. They own around a fifth. The other major Nigerian owner is Aliko Dangote, who the plant ahs been named after.
The financial benefits for Nigeria will be profound. The entire plant will ultimately generate 10,000 direct jobs and over 20,000 indirect jobs, not to mention the knock on benefit to existing businesses in the surrounding area. This will double the refinery capacity of the west African state, meaning a reduction in expensive imports. Positioned near the coast, a harbour has been constructed allowing jet fuel, gasoline, diesel and other products to be exported to foreign markets around the world.
As well as the usual petrochemical products, the plant will very cleverly and efficiently produce hydrogen, sulphur, polypropylene and even fertilizer by utilising by products from the refinery process.
They have facilities to recapture and reuse heat energy and sulphuric acid regeneration.
Several other refineries around the world will be looking at this facility very carefully. It will have some worried about their ability to compete.
