North connect is a proposed Scotland Norway interconnector.
A proposed high voltage electrical cable from Simadalen in Norway to Peterhead in Scotland, UK.
This 650 km (400-mile) 1,400 MW HVDC interconnector across the North Sea has been shelved.
The Norwegian government have decided that they do not want to increase their electricity exports for the time being. Increasing exports would increase prices for Norwegian homes and industry.
The project may go ahead in the future as Norway continues to increase their electrical production.
It is the closest point from Norway to the UK mainland that has the infrastructure available for the project.
Peterhead was a busy fishing town before the oil industry came to the area. It's still a fishing town, but now it's also a busy port for the oil industry.
The gas fired power station located just south of the town, requires electricity transmission lines to supply the power to the National Grid.
Peterhead has room for the required converter station on the grounds of the existing gas-fired power station. Another factor making the location attractive for this project is the UK National Grid 275KV electricity transmission network located at Peterhead.
HV DC is more efficient to transmit over long distances than AC, especially underground or underwater.
