Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves of any country on the planet. More than the current proven reserves of the rest of South America, North America, Europe and Africa put together. They are only around the 11th or 12th biggest oil producer, just ahead of Europe's biggest producer Norway. At their current production levels Venezuela could produce oil for at least a thousand years!

Disgusting Corruption

They should be a very rich country, making the most of the oil while they can. They could create a South American jewel state, where their children never go hungry and are highly educated. They could become a respected and powerful country. Like Norway, they could have an oil investment fund that would see their country and it's 30 million people secure, for ever.

Children In Poverty

Instead, the reality is hard to understand. You couldn't make it up. More than half the children live in extreme poverty with little hope of escape. Should we blame the systemic corruption and incompetent governments? Yes, of course, but what else is going on?
